Ambient intelligence is a novel paradigm for embedded computing referring to a world in which electronics are integrated into the surroundings of people enabling them to interact with their environment in a natural way, thus providing access to services and information in a context aware, personalized, and responsive way. The vision of ambient intelligence can be implemented using a device hierarchy that applies three types of device nodes, i.e., the autonomous or μWatt node, the nomadic or mWatt node, and the static or Watt node. Networks consisting of these various node types can implement different ambient intelligence functionalities such as context awareness, ubiquitous access, and natural user interfaces. We discuss some of the design issues resulting from this device hierarchy for ambient intelligence environments, and more specifically we present some research challenges for interconnecting and packaging.
