The impact of solar spectrum variations on the output performance of amorphous Si//thin-film crystalline Si stacked photovoltaic (PV) modules, which is spectrally sensitive, has been investigated. The PV modules facing due south with a tilt angle of 15.3 are installed at Shiga, Japan (north latitude 34°58', south longitude 135°57')-The spectral irradiance distributions (spectral index) of outdoor solar spectra of the wavelength range of 350-1050 nm are recorded by a spectroradiometer. The annual outdoor solar spectra measurements revealed that the more than 95 % of the annual total spectra were blue-rich compared to the AM 1.5 standard solar spectrum. The outdoor performance of the PV modules had a higher spectral dependence than that of polycrystalline Si PV modules installed at the same condition. Also, the peak of the histogram of the annual spectral indexes well corresponded to the peak of the output performance of the PV module as a function of spectral index. The results indicate that the actual spectral irradiance distribution (not the standard spectrum) is important in designing the stacked PV modules.
