The molecular mechanism and light emitters of the chemiluminescence (CL) of firefly luciferin (Ln) have been interpreted as outlined in Fig.I.1'3 The oxygenation of Ln i° *ne Presence of a strong base (e.g., BuOK) produces a dioxetanone, which successively decomposes to form an electronically-excited oxyluciferin (Oxyln*).4'5 Oxyln* emits green- or red-colored light depending on its ionized state: a monoanion of Oxyln* in the keto form emits red-colored light, while its mono-and/or di-anion in the enolic form emits green-colored light at high base concentrations.
