Chiral macroaggregates of the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein complexes (LHCII) are thought to play an important role in photosynthesis (Garab 1996). They were suggested to be involved in the lateral separation of the two photosystems, in theexcitation energy migration, in the dissipation of the excessive light energy, protecting the photosynthetic apparatus against photoinhibitory damage probably via non-photochemical quenching (Horton et al 1994). The macroaggregates are sensitive to various stresses, e.g. high temperature or strong light as shown by circular dichroism (CD) (Gussakovsky et al 1997, Cseh et al 2000).
