In plants the gaseous hormone ethylene regulates many aspects of growth and development, such as germination, ripening or leaf abscission. Furthermore, ethylene is also supposed to mediate a number of various stress signals as well as pathogen attack(Bleecker et al 2002). Signal perception and response to ethylene are mediated by a small family of integral membrane receptors including the ETR1 gene product. These receptor proteins show substantial ho-mology to bacterial and eukaryotic two-componentregulator proteins and contain an N-terminal transmembrane sensor domain, a catalytic transmitter domain including a histidine kinase domain and a C-terminal response regulator domain (Bleecker et al 2002).
