Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) is a process dissipating excess light energy as harmless thermal energy so that plants can perform the optimal rate of photochemistry. NPQ is currently classified into three components. One of them is energy-dependentquenching (qE), which is induced upon lumenal acidification, forming a complex for deactivating singlet chlorophyll molecules (~1Chl*). The de-excitation of ~1Chl* which are generated by excess light energy results in thermal dissipation. qE is thought to be the major component of NPQ and induced within seconds. Another NPQ, caused by state transition (qT), is induced when plastoquinone (PQ) pool is reduced.
