The lipid environment provides not only the structural environment for the reaction center, RC, but regulates its function as well (Nagy et al 2004). (i) The structural flexibility of the proteins is larger in membrane than in detergent indicating that the degree of freedom of the movements of amino acid side chains is larger in the membrane, (ii) The response of biological membranes to various signals leads to change in the membrane composition. (iii) There are inherent components of the membranes that regulate the photochemical energy conversion. (iv) Specific molecules (also lipids) bind to specific sites of the RCs modifying the physical parameters of the charge stabilization (Camara-Artigas et al 2002, Nogi et al 2000).
