HEPATIC CELLULAR HOMOCYSTEINE KINETICS IN THE DIABETIC STATE

Diabetes mellitus results from defects in insulin secretion and/or insulin action. It currently affects approximately 4% of the population worldwide. Diabetes, commonly accompanying hyperglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, obesity and abnormal homocysteine metabolism, is associated with a marked increase in the occurrence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases. As an independent risk factor, hyperhomocysteinemia may contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in diabetes.
