Development of High Performance Magnesium Alloys by Rapid Solidification

Rapidly solidified(RS) Mg-Zn-X (X=Al, Si, Cu, Ce or Y) and AZ31 alloys were prepared for the development of high performance magnesium alloys. Annealing at various temperatures for 1h had no obvious effect on the phase constitutions of the RS alloys, but greatly influenced the grain size. RS Mg-6Zn-2Si flakes showed the significant increase in hardness after annealing at 473K and the minor decrease after annealing at 573K. The as-produced sheets of 2mm in thickness had the ultimate tensile strength of 320MPa and the elongation to rupture of 8.3%. The pores in the extrusion are probably the main cause for the relatively poor ductility. Large deformation forming can be a promising solution to prepare high performance RS/PM magnesium alloys.
