Mg-based alloy comprises in wt.% 2-11 Al; 0-12 Zn; 0-0.6 Mn; 0-7 Ca with plus the presence of Zn and/or Ca assured and the following impurities:- 0.1-0.6 Si; less than 0.2 Cu; less than 0.1 Fe; less than o.1 Ni; balance Ms. The alloy has an average grain size below 3 micron m and is made of an homogeneous matrix reinforced by intermetallic compound particles of Ms17Al12; possibly Mg32 (Al,Zn)49 and Al2Ca of size below 1 micron m, pref. below 0.5 micron m precipitated at grain boundries.
