Postoperative Mental Outcome for Unilateral Coronal Suture Synostosis

In this study the postoperative mental outcome for unilateral coronal suture synostosis was determined and the effect of early (< 1 year of age) versus late (> 1 year of age) surgical correction on mental outcome. In a prospective study on 220 patients both preoperative and postoperative developmental quotient (DQ) or intelligence quotient (IQ) was measured. Preoperative DQ or IQ was not affected by the age at surgery. Mental outcome was not influenced by an increased ICP (> 15 mm Hg) or by the presence of the FGFR3 mutation. Therefore, indication for surgical correction appears to be largely cosmetically.
