This paper identifies and addresses all the possible modes of failure which are likely to occur in connection with reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally bonded steel/FRP plates glued to their soffit (tension side). Furthermore, this paper presents an analytical study which explains the effect of variations in the magnitude of the modulus of elasticity, E{sub}p, for the external Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) plates bonded to the tension side of reinforced concrete beams, on the modes of failure for the composite beam with a detailed account of section stress and strain distributions, plus the resulting beam flexural load capacities.
