Granulation of Growth Media for Indoor Air Purification Utilizing Botanically-Based Systems

We present a preliminary design and a small-scale granulation process for growth media (GM) that is used in a self-regenerating, botanically-based air purifying system (BAPS). The GM, composed of activated carbon (AC) and growstone (G), can be integrated into any heating, ventilating and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system. Wet granulation is used to create a homogeneous mixed-bed of non-equal density AC and G. Three different GM were granulated: 60% G and 40% AC; 70% G and 30% AC and 50% G and 50% AC. Compared to the un-granulated product, a minimum pore obstruction of approximately 42% could be achieved using melt granulation.
