Ionic Liquids for the Purification of Air Intakes for Military Applications

Selective and high-capacity capture of toxins in the air is necessary for any air purification system, but especially so for military applications where toxins may be warfare agents with much more acute risks than traditional air toxins. The work presented here will illustrate the power of ionic liquids (ILs) for capturing DMMP as a model simulant in both the IL liquid state and as a functional tether to activated carbon. While the IL itself can be a good absorbent, by tethering to the AC, the filtration system becomes more stable and easier to handle, while maintaining the functionality of the IL.
