Health and Household-Related Benefits of Low-Income Weatherization

One component of two evaluations of the U.S. Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) focused on evaluating the health and household co-benefits of low-income weatherization in the U.S. Surveys of treatment and comparison group households pre- and post-weatherization indicated that household members' health and households' budget situations improved post-weatherization. Twelve co-benefits were monetized. The results suggest that the value of these co-benefits are at least three times greater than the cost of weatherization. The main contributors to this estimate are avoided deaths and avoided physician, emergency department visits and hospitalizations.
