The article illustrates the capabilities of the integrated solution CATIA V5 in training undergraduate mechanics students in the field of planar mechanisms. The position of this integrated solution among the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) solutions is discussed in the introduction. Mechanism modeling in CATIA V5 is performed on two levels: a rapid but basic one in Sketcher and a second, more complex but powerful one in Part Design, Assembly Design and DMU Kinematics. The two-level modeling process is illustrated for the most common elements and for kinematical joints of planar mechanisms. Examples of two-level modeling are provided for quadrilateral mechanisms type R-RRR, R-RRT and R-RTR. Planar mechanisms have been modeled using the tools Part Design, Assembly Design and DMU Kinematics.
