The evolution towards high performance precision equipment, demanded by mechatronic technology, has revealed the limitations of traditional motion generation mechanisms. Their flexibility for generation of a wide variety of motions is rather restricted. Bar linkages can generate very complicated motions, but once they are materialized the motions are only adjustable in a limited way. Another limitation of traditional mechanisms is there inherent lack of accuracy, caused by friction, backlash, wind-up errors, resonance, dimensional errors, etc. The paper includes details regarding the main features of the mechatronic systems. Based on these features the ways from the traditional mechanisms to the mechatronic ones are described. Some problems concerning the control mechanism based on mechatronic approach are also outlined.
