Role of microbiology diagnosis in semen quality of infertile men: preliminary study

Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum and Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma hominis are potentially pathogenic species playing an etiologic role in human genital infections and male infertility. A total of 22 semen samples were collected from infertile men and analyzed for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, mycoplasmas, yeasts and Trichomonas vaginalis by culture and molecular methods. 5/22 (22.8%) were positive for Mycoplasma genitalium (1), Mycoplasma hominis (2), Ureaplasma urealyticum (1) and Mycoplasma hominis + Ureaplasma parvum (1) by PCR. 1/22 (4.5%) was positive for Mycoplasma hominis by culture. These positive samples were negative for other bacteria, yeasts and Trichomonas vaginalis. Molecular diagnosis is more sensitive and specific for mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas detection than culture method.
