We reported previously that long-chain free fatty acids (FFAs) antagonize volatile anesthetics in goldfish [1]. Saturated long-chain FFAs have no feature other than a straight alkyl carbon chain and carboxyl group. Because elongation of the alkyl chain increases the hydrophobicity of FFAs, the findings suggest that their hydrophobicity may play an important role in their antagonizing effects. However, the contribution of their molecular configuration is not clear. The presence of a as-double bond placed centrally in the carbon chain may affect antagonizing potencies because it changes the molecular configuration of FFAs. We therefore compared antagonizing potencies of saturated and unsaturated long-chain FFAs with isoflurane in goldfish.
