Aperture synthesis instruments clearly demonstrate the fundamental role of redundancyin adaptive optics wavefront calibration. This controlled redundancy facilitates theformulation of wavefront sensing or active instrument calibration in terms of a system ofequations with the same structure, and we give a synopsis of these methods here. Diluteapertures are also being investigated for use in line-of-sight optical communications,where atmospheric perturbations cause signal fade/drop out. We report preliminary workon experimental and theoretical modeling of scintillation statistics resulting fromatmospheric propagation, eventually to be used, to inform array design so as to maximizethe probability of signal detection.
