Rapid tooling for small batch production in micro injection moulding

Injection moulding tools consist of standard components. A frame plate in the mould contains inserts with the cavities of the negative part geometry. These inserts can be manufactured with Rapid Prototyping technology. Using this method even small batches with frequently changing parts can be produced flexibly and economically. A flexible micro injection moulding tool was developed and tested. The inserts were manufactured using different Rapid Prototyping processes as well as High Speed Cutting. Inserts consisting of plastics and metal materials were tested. Small batches of parts were produced and assessed.
