Study of the Oxygen Reduction Process on Air Cathode

The volume of oxygen generated from the electrolysis bath made up of an air cathode and nickel anode is measured, and the proportion of the two courses, 2e and 4e path oxygen reduction process, can be distinguished quantitatively according to the relation between the gas generation per minute and the current. The results show that the 2e path reaction covers 74% on the air cathode using active carbon as electro-catalyst, while the 4e path reaction covers up to 100% when the percentage of the catalyst MnO_2 in the air catalyst layer of air electrode reaches 33 %. This method can demonstrate the corresponding changes with time in the two kinds of oxygen reduction reaction.
