Over a four year period Volkswagen research has developed and built up an ergonomics mock-up for ergonomic vehicle design. It is based on the use of methods from the field of virtual reality (VR). A 3D human model which presents the user in the virtual environment is one of the system's central components. The mock-up enables the sort of impression of the automobile's interior which had previously only been possible through very elaborate physical models. In particular ergonomic investigations which subjectively evaluate visual conditions, user interaction and operating procedures through simple driving scenarios can be carried out in a VR environment using this new form of virtual ergonomic prototyping. This article will present an outline of the system as well as some of the first practical experiences with it.
