摘要

The premise assumed in this study is that according to which, since irony is a way of expression, it spreads without being transmitted and it is addressed to a social environment. I want to prove, starting from Socrates and Aristophanes, that irony is in the rhetoric of educational discourse, an educational intervention among the most important. For this, I analyze the relation between the old and the new education in Athens, and I take into account two representative standpoints: the one of Socrates, the representative of the new education, and the one of Aristophanes, supporter of the old education. The difference between these two is given precisely by the concept of irony with its educational valences, a concept that is foreign for Aristophanes.
