The U.S. coal-fired plants are the dominant source of power generation, accounting for 52% of electricity production, while oil-fired plants provide less than 3% of electricity production in 1997. Numerous studies were carried out to investigate the elemental composition from coal combustion processes around the world, due to possibly the adverse effect of the components on environment and human health. The power plant chemical assessment (PISCE) model also suggested that trace elemental emissions from most coal- fired power plants in the U.S. would exceed the reporting thresholds for the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), which is a comprehensive database designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA).
