A FRESH VIEW ON THE OUTER SPACE TREATY AND ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE POST-AGENDA 2030 GOALS

On the occasion of UNISPACE III+50, the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) invited students and young professionals to submit their ideas for a sustainable use of outer space. UNCOPUOS defined as thematic priorities for UNISPACEIII+50 the following topics: Space governance (UN treaties and principles on outer space), Capacity-building (in the use of space science and technology and their applications for the benefit of all countries), Resiliency, Interoperability and Space for sustainable development (efforts to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development). Therefore, the studies with the 'next' generation were done from a legal perspective in regard to the Outer Space Treaty and from a more political angle on possible upcoming challenges once the UN goals of the 2030 agenda may be implemented. Hence, this paper will highlight the most salient points in those regards to encourage a view beyond UNISPACE III+50 to ensure safe, secure and sustainable space activities.
