Development of Cicada-Proof Optical Fiber Drop Cable with Polyurethane Jacket

In recent years, with a rapid increase of the FTTH, there have been many troubles in Japan that cicadas named "Cryptotympana facialis" try to lay their eggs in aerial drop cables and damage optical fibers inside the cables, which causes communication failures. More than 1,000 damages were reported in Western Japan in 2006. In order to resolve these troubles, we developed a cicada-proof optical fiber drop cable with polyurethane jacket which is effective against cicada attacks.
