Evaluation of Novel Thermoplastic Polyolefin in Model Non-Halogenated Flame Retardant Compounds

This paper covers the evaluation of LyondellBasell's proprietary Catalloy process resins in non-halogenated flame retardant formulations to demonstrate the unique properties of this technology. A key feature of the Catalloy process technology is that it allows the incorporation of high levels of rubber (>40 percent wt) in the reactor versus post-reactor physical blends. The Catalloy process produces thermoplastic polyolefins with good filler acceptance, excellent high temperature resistance and low crystallinity. A series of experiments was conducted using Catalloy process resins, metal hydroxides, intumescents and other additives to determine baseline performance as compared to two commercially available flame retardant compounds. The results obtained from non-halogenated flame retardant model formulations based on Catalloy process resins demonstrated significant improvements in processability, a good balance of low and high temperature performance, excellent abuse resistance, as well as the potential for recycling.
