Deep digital flexor (DDF) tendonitis occurs in hind limbs and forelimbs of performance horses. Injuries tend to he located in the metatarsal region of the tendon in the hindlimb and the pastern region in the forelimb. Return to athletic activity is possible after 9-12 mo of rest and rehabilitation. Superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendonitis and suspensory ligament injuries are a frequent cause of lameness in racehorses and English and Western performance horses. Injury to the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) is not seen as often as injuries to the SDF or suspensory ligament, and hind limb tendon/ligament injuries are usually not as common as forelimb tendonitis.
