Dentistry of Equine Cheek Teeth

Compared with many other aspects of equine medicine, research in equine dentistry is lagging far behind. Although there has been some excellent research recently, very little definitive information is available stating how best to deal with some of the dental abnormalities that we so commonly encounter. Because so much of the available information has come from old literature and nonscientists, it is likely that a scientific approach will change at least some of the recommendations as time progresses. A tremendous amount of our current knowledge and recommendations has come from those of us who have performed large numbers of examinations and corrections. I believe my opinions are based on reason and common sense, but again, they are opinions. Aboveall, we must strive to do no harm. The current consensus stresses the importance of accomplishing our comprehensive dental treatment goals in a rapid and efficient manner for the safety of both the horse and the practitioner. It seems obvious that thiscannot be achieved without the use of power equipment in many horses. A thorough exam of the most caudal areas of the horse's mouth reveals the damaging enamel points that are either not removed or return amazingly soon after floating with hand tools. Because the enamel points and the soft tissues of the caudal portions of the mouth are in such close apposition, good, safe dentistry in the back of the mouth is extremely important. The relative inaccessibility of that region helps make it the "weak link" in the average dental "float."
