In conventional milking systems, key elements of the milking routine are essential to minimise the risk of contamination, to ensure that only milk from healthy udders is consigned for human consumption and to identify any animals requiring treatment.The introduction of automatic milking has brought into focus the question of how "abnormal milk" is detected on the farm and excluded from consignment for sale for human consumption. In addition to meeting the requirements of legislation, farmers adopting automated milking systems will be increasingly reliant on sensor technology to identify animals in need of treatment or other management intervention.
