HIGHLY SOLUBLE IMIDE OLIGOMER FOR COMPOSITE HAVING PEPA BASED ON AMORPHOUS, ASYMMETRIC AND ADDITION TYPE POLYIMIDE TriA-PI

In order to develop well-soluble imide oligomer for making fiber-reinforced composite, we prepared two types of addition-type imide oligomers having phenylethynyl group, introducing i-BPDA or ODPA into a-BPDA, 4,4'-ODA, and PEPA (Tri-A), and investigated thermal and mechanical properties. Although the imide co-oligomers prepared from ODPA (10% and 25% ODPA addition) (n=4) were soluble in heated NMP (40%), there were found to have high Tg (cured, 343°C and 339°C) and improved elongation at break (13, 17%), corresponding to the Tg (347°C) and elongation at break (12%) of Tri-A. On the other hand, the imide oligomers synthesized from i-BPDA (25, 50 and 75% addition) showed outstanding solubility (40%) even at room temperature and low melt viscosity (19.2 Pa) at over 300°C, whereas the Tg proved to be slightly lower (318-329°C) than Tri-A. These findings indicate that these imide co-oligomers synthesized had a promising potential for the resin of high temperature composite.
