The Downside of the Good Life or Problem Sexual Behaviors of Companion Parrots

Psittacine species have become popular as companion animals because they demonstrate many kinds of social behavior that humans find familiar and enjoyable. Such endearing traits as beauty, intelligence, and mimicry have led humans to adopt them as members of their family. Recognizing that some of these traits are innate and genetically determined will allow for a new and better understanding of companion psittacine behavior and enable us to better predict responses of different species to the conditions of pet bird care. Developing an appreciation for how and why innate behaviors can be triggered by specific actions or conditions will hopefully lead to better and healthier lives for captive psittacine birds.
