The Productivity of blast furnaces has increased world-wide over the past years and today is at quite a high level. This progress has been rendered possible also by the fact that there has been some reorientation in the sector of cast house operation, especially concerning the tapping strategy. Up to now, cast house operation had always been considered more from an economic point of view. The objective was to achieve low refractory costs for the lining of the runner system, reduction of the number of personnel employed for relining work and reduction of the refractory consumption for tap hole and runner system as well as improvement of the properties of the materials used. The demand for further reduction of costs in the cast house sector will, of course, also exist in future. Above this, the increased productivity of blast furnaces and the effect on tapping technology and cast house operation will have to be taken into account to an increasing extent.
