Hot metal and slag produced in a blast furnace is drained through a hole drilled on the hearth wall of the blast furnace. A trough is a receptacle wherein the mixed liquid drained from the taphole is separated gravimetrically into hot metal and slag. The temperature of hot metal in the trough ranges within 1470-1530°C. The tap-hole and troughs are lined with alumina-silicon carbide-carbon (Al_2O_3-SiC-C) refractories.
