Experimental validation of the DORA model for bed load transport in storm sewers

The DORA (Double ORder Approximation) model has been extended to the solution of 1D shallow water equations in unsteady-state flow and mobile bed condition. The DORA methodology can be classified among the fractional time step methods. Results of the numerical code have been compared to experimental data obtained in unsteady non equilibrium conditions using a semi-ovoid perspex pipe in the laboratory flume of the Laboratory of Hydraulic Models in the Department of Soil Defence, University of Calabria, Italy. Cases of degradation have been considered. Results of the model seem to fit profiles of sediment and water depth quite well using bed load versus velocity relationships already proposed in literature for equilibrium conditions.
