In this paper we introduce a halfway approach to co-ordination in multi-agent systems that lies between game theory and social norms. Rights allow agents enough freedom, and, at the same time, constrain their behaviour by prohibiting specific actions. Besides, rights can be understood as a basic concept underneath open normative systems where agents reason about the code they must abide by, either because it is underspecified or because agents do not have complete knowledge about the rules governing their interaction. For the agents to come up with satisfactory solutions in such scenarios we present an argumentation protocol.
