PMMA cement was reinforced by 20.CaO-80SiC>2 gel In order to induce bioactivity, and its apatite forming ability was investigated using simulated body fluid. The gel containing 20CaO-80SiC>2 was easily prepared by sol-gel method. When the gel powders replaced 50wt% of the PMMA, the cement was hardened after mixing for 7 min. Conventional PMMA cement did not form apatite on its surface, but the novel PMMA-based bone cement reinforced by sol-gel derived 20CaO-80SiC>2 gel formed bonelike apatite on its surface after soaking in SBF7.25 for 2 weeks. From these results, it is suggested that novel PMMA-based bone cement can bond to living bone and then it can be used for bioactive bone cement.
