Extraction Outcomes in AIDS Patients

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS estimates that 40 million people are infected with HIV. In America the CDC estimated the cases of AIDS through 2002 to be 886,575. The CDC estimated that the cumulative population of persons surviving for more than 36 months after an AIDS diagnosis to be 82(percent). As with the non infected population, HIV/AIDS patients are in need for routine health care, including dental care. There have been very few studies that have examined the post extraction outcomes in HIV positive patients, and currently there are no studies looking at the extraction outcomes in patients with the diagnosis of AIDS. The purpose of this study is to evaluate extraction outcomes in patients who have a diagnosis of AIDS in order to allow physicians to give recommendations when asked for medical clearance by their dental colleges.
