The European project FCSHIP, started in July 2002 with a two year duration, establishes thepresent inventory status, indicates possible future concepts, prepares the initial regulations fordesign and operation and assesses environmental and economic aspects of the implementationof fuel cell technology in the marine market. The project consortium consists of 21 partnersheaded by the Norwegian Shipowners' Association.One of the work packages of FCSHIP focuses on the Life Cycle Analysis of fuel cell shipsincluding fuel production, supply and use. Within FCSHIP, two case ship designs have beendeveloped, a 140 m Ro-Ro Fast Ferry with a fuel cell for onboard power supply and a 30 mFerry with fuel cell propulsion. Suitable fuels have been identified, and their infrastructuralrequirements and possible production and supply options have been analyzed.Greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions related to various production, supply and use optionsof hydrogen, natural gas and conventional or advanced conventional ship fuels based on fossil(mineral oil, natural gas) and renewable sources of primary energy (wind power, hydro power,biomass) have been assessed. Cost analyses for these fuel paths have been conducted. Theresults of these analyses including all steps from primary energy production to the use of thefuel onboard the ship are presented here.
