Linking Research to Interventions: Adapting the Information-Motivation-Behavioural Skill (IMB) Theoretical Model in a Community Level HIV Intervention in Nigeria

It is now generally agreed that theory-based HIV prevention interventions are more likely to be effective than atheoretical ones. The information-motivation and behavioural skills (IMB) model is relatively new but proven in recent years to be very successful in HIV prevention interventions. The main objective of the paper is to show how the IMB, as an individual-level behaviour change model, can be adapted to suit the Nigerian society where community level social support systems are stronger in inducing and maintaining behaviour change. The three components of the original model were found, at the initial investigative phase, to be too narrow in the African context. These constructs: information, motivation and HIV prevention behavioural skills were not sufficient in effecting behaviour change. The model was improved upon by adding a new construct: 'Social Support'. Community level interventions are more likely to succeed if theories from western societies are adapted to suit non-western societies.
