A method of balancing an operating machine is proposed which is based on measuring frequency response functions between external measurement points and the balancing planes. Reciprocity and an Inverse Frequency Response Function Method are used to determine the unbalance forces from measured forced vibrations. This procedure has application to equipment which cannot be conveniently shut down to perform balancing with the trial weight method. The unbalances can be determined during operation and correction weights can be applied during scheduled shutdowns. An example is presented on a small rotating disk experimental rig.
