The paper presents the possibilities of a wide practical application of the modal analysis methods in dynamic testing of complex power generating objects. A pneumatic impact hammer for testing vital hydrounit components submerged under deep water was developed and successfully applied. The problem with the water environment is that it causes significant changes in modal parameters, compared with those in the air environment. The paper gives the results of testing stay vanes and runner blades in air and water environments. Two different Kaplan type hydrounits and one Francis type hydrounit were tested.
