This paper introduces the functions and characteristics of the newly built multifunction artificial climate chamber of Chongqing University. Based on the test results performed on several types of iced insulators with a withstand voltage method in the chamber, it indicates that the withstand duration for an iced insulator should be at least 15 minutes, and that at normal conditions, all the tested insulator strings iced with a freezing water conductivity of 300μS/cm can withstand the service voltage. It analyzes the effect of the atmospheric pressure on withstand and flashover voltages. Because the discharge path has a high randomness, the effect of atmospheric pressure on flashover voltages of iced insulators has a high disparity.
