In this study, series of investigations were conducted in control methods of alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in concrete under various conditions, and their characteristics, operation methods, control effects, costs, and comprehensive environmental burdens quantified by social cost. Then, an environment-conscious approach to AAR control design was proposed, and a computer-aided design support system was developed. This support system can help designer efficiently decide effective and environment-friendly AAR control measures by presenting effective AAR control methods according to particular design conditions including environmental conditions, and features of reactive aggregate, etc. for new concrete production or for affected concrete, and showing the operation methods, costs, and social costs of these methods. This paper introduced this AAR control design approach and design support system, and gave an application example for the production of cast-in -place concrete pile.
