The machining spindle is one of the most important components that are closely related to the quality of the product. In order to determine its dynamic characteristics, a fully instrumented machining spindle was built by the General Motors Technical Center and donated to the University of Michigan-Dearborn. This paper presents the experimental modal analysis of this high speed spindle. The experience received from conducting the modal analysis, such as the excitation method, the excitation location, the selection of accelerometers, and the test results are included in the paper.
