This paper presents a method for modeling, analyzing and improving product development process in order to enhance the product lifecycle performance. Four perspectives are identified to address the product performance issues with a life cycle engineering approach: process configurations and performance goals in the product development and the correlation between them; methods and models to analyze the product development process for balanced lifecycle performance; product quality and customer value; and software support tools. The method is implemented in prototyping tools and applied to case studies in consumer electronics industry. Performance improvements to the product development process are achieved through the use of this method together with the prototyping tools to automate, integrate, and collaborate the development activities for consumer electronic products.
