For substituting mercury in HID-discharges noble gases are possible candidates. The noble gases should substitute the unique properties of mercury. That is a large transport cross section which allows a lamp operation with low currents and high field strengths, so that a sufficient evaporation of additives can be achieved. The buffer gases influence the radiation properties of HID-lamps. This effect is discussed in this presentation considering as example neon and xenon as buffer gases.
