Fluorescent Lamps (FLs), having a negative resistance characteristic of the discharge, need the gears for operation. For long years, traditional magnetic gears have been mainly employed. However, during the last two decades, the high-frequency (HF) operational FL systems with electronic gears (EGs) have become popular. That is because the HF operation with EGs offers not only a higher lamp efficacy over 10% but also a significant increase of the system efficacy together with downsizing and weight saving of systems. In addition, coping with the recent energy-saving requirement, various types of single-capped compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) with EGs were introduced. Furthermore, electronic gears add some useful functions applicable for dimming and auto-switching systems with sensing unit. Nowadays, such FL systems with EGs make a notable stream in the FL lighting fields.
