The behavior of air and water inside compressed air vessels (CAV) is of great interest. It provides required information for important subjects in hydraulic transient, e.g., controlling the pressure surges induced by water hammer and storing the pressure within CAV for later use. An apparatus was used to create water hammer for measuring the pressure and velocity in the transient state in a fully confined CAV to observe behavior of the air. This work presents an analysis of ability of air pocket in absorption of pressure surges and most efficient volume of the air pocket based on experimental measurements.
